Christmas is nearly upon us once again as we start to make plans for the big day : ‘who is hosting this year ?’ , ‘what presents will I buy?’ and now a growing trend is ‘when do I get the decorations out and how will I decorate my home this year ?’. As someone that is obsessed with home design and décor, this last question is for me!
Christmas is over in the blink of an eye and all the preparation and effort is put in for just that one day. However, it is the build up to the day itself that I like the best and the fact that we get to live in a winter wonderland for a month ( or 2 if you are like me ) and we can let our inner creative take over and have some fun knowing that none of it is permanent.
This is just my take on what is looking to be popular this year but there will be no getting away from the traditional décor that we all have in our loft and will always come out at Christmas. Think timeless classics such as green, red & gold from our trees to our wreaths and table dec’s etc. The trends outlined below will just add a different dimension to these staple’s.
If you have a love of home décor and like to keep on top of the latest interior looks then this article regarding what is currently ‘On Trend’ for Christmas 2024 is just for you.
Number 1 : Sustainable and Eco-friendly Decorations
I think we are all becoming more environmentally aware and wanting to make the right choices for the planet. We are seeing this more and more in home décor and accessories and now we are seeing this become a trend in the approach to Christmas Decorating.
(All items displayed including the white light up christmas tree and paper trees are for sale on my website )
This trend is all about using natural materials such as wicker, paper, cardboard, wood and foraged foliage such as pine cones. Recycled items are popular and sustainable decorations that can be used year after year. The rattan and wicker theme fits well in the current home interiors trend and therefore these items will blend effortlessly in most design.
Number 2 : Jewel Tones and Metallics with Neutral Accents
Rich jewel-toned colours like emerald green, deep burgundy, chocolate and sapphire blue are popular, along with metallic accents in gold, silver and bronze. However these are being offset with soft neutrals that we are seeing everywhere in home design and these colours include creams, taupe, white and tan. This allows every piece of xmas decor to fit seamlessly into your overall interior whilst keeping things merry and bright.
Number 3 : Vintage and Nostalgic Décor
Being a lover of vintage décor I am thrilled that there appears to be a trend towards vintage and antique looking décor this year for a touch of nostalgia. The popular items in this category include antique gold effects, brass & iron bells & cowbells strung on rope , vintage effect stars, oversized velvet bows, felt tree decorations and traditional advent candles and advent calendar tealights in antique designs.
( If you like this bow you can find step by step instructions on how to create it in my 'Make Your Own Oversized Christmas Bow' article )
Christmas décor is no different to our daily home décor whereby including some vintage pieces injects some warmth and soul into the overall look.
Number 4 : Personalised and DIY decorations
There appears to be a definite trend towards handmade Christmas decorations which is perhaps fuelled by all of the content on social media and also the desire to save money. I think handmade wreaths will be popular using all natural materials including foraged foliage and berries, wood, pine cones, dried fruits and hessian.

Hand made bows are making a comeback this year using red or gold velvet but think ‘oversized’.
There are also many ideas available for making your own table decorations and even your own advent calendars! No doubt I will be sharing afew of my own ideas on instagram so do take a look @kristiarosecollections_home. Artisan and homemade products add a personal and meaningful touch to your Christmas décor so do give it a go and have fun !

Number 5 : Door/ Front Garden Scaping
This might currently be more of a trend in America, however we are usually quick to follow suit. This is a trend of taking your Xmas décor to outside of your home such as your porch or front garden and thereby creating a warm Christmas welcome to your guests before they step through the door and also to give them a sense of what is to come.
Think beautiful wreaths hanging on the door, xmas trees/foliage in rattan pots either side of the door with fairy lights twinkling, xmas welcome mats and outdoor ornaments. You could even drape garlands if you are lucky enough to have a porch, but if not you could hang above the door or underneath your windows.
